A Personal Chef is someone in charge of the kitchen who prepares palate specific meals for their clients to enjoy later. A Personal Chef helps families gather around the table for meals, allows singles to eat healthier, and couples to enjoy a quality time with food they love. Busy, time-starved families hire a Personal Chef in order to eat better, enjoy food prepared just for them using the freshest meats and produce, herbs, and just the right amount of spice. These personalized meals are prepared in a client's home and then packaged, labeled and stored in the refrigerator or freezer. The service includes:
Customized Menu Planning
Love pasta? Hate onions? Not enough garlic?
A Personal Chef Service takes the time to learn your individual needs and preferences. They use this information to create delicious meals personalized to your individual tastes.
Grocery Shopping
Don't have time to stop at the store and wait in line? A Personal Chef Service performs the shopping for you. They purchase the freshest and finest ingredients just before coming to your home and preparing your meals.
In-Home Meal Preparation
Tired of the hassle in preparing meals everyday?
A Personal Chef comes to your home with everything needed and prepares multiple personalized meals in your kitchen.
Storage and Cleanup
Dirty sink, pots and pans, greasy stove?
The Personal Chef packages and stores your meals in your refrigerator and freezer. They leave your kitchen sparkling clean and your home filled with aromas of freshly prepared foods.
First a Personal Chef will complete an interview to customize meals, determine dinner time favorites, discuss allergies and dislikes, and then shop for the freshest ingredients. After shopping the Personal Chef cooks delicious meals in the home of their client complete with heating directions.
Personal Chefs customarily work for several clients, unlike a Private Chef that works for only one client. Personal Chefs are known for custom in-home catering, commercial kitchens offering clients delivery services, party assistance, special additions like holiday cooking, baking, prepped meals, and HMR (Home Meal Replacement). Each Personal Chef owns their own business so making it unique is part of the business planning. You can use your cooking talent in a variety of ways and Personal Chefs Network® supports the endeavors of their members by offering fanatical chef support.
Do I need to be a qualified Chef?
It helps! but cooking experience is the essential ingredient here, along with confidence and an amiable non-flappable personality. If you have ever worked as a cook/housekeeper or cook/butler you have all the right beginnings.
If you cook for people other than family, on a regular basis you are probably well on the way to becoming a Personal Chef. I don't mean flipping burgers and frying chips, this is by no means 'fast food' although it helps if you are quick!
Each Chef develops their own clientele individually. You learn to specialise according to your ability and the clients enjoyment. The most rewarding experience is to be asked back for more of the same. Of course you will need a Food Hygiene Certificate from your local Authority as will anyone who works with you, including family members. Cooking in other peoples homes does not require a licence or other red tape, however, for the benefit of you and your clients it is advisable to take as many courses as you can on the specialties you intend to pursue.
Many famous restaurants and hotels offer short courses which, although expensive, are also very enjoyable. Keep up to date with food ideas and trends until you are confident enough to develop your own style and recipes. If you intend to go into this seriously it is advisable to obtain insurance (I personally carry insurance for up to £5m.) If you think that is excessive don't, your next job could be in a palace! You will also require a vehicle with some form of refrigeration or cold storage for transporting ingredients. If you are cooking in your own kitchen remember that it has to be licensed and regularly inspected by the local authority.
